Paul C. Silva Student Grants

Paul C. Silva worked at the University of California, Berkeley, U.S.A., and made important contributions to algal taxonomy and nomenclature throughout his career. Dr. Silva strongly advocated for phycology, phycologists and international cooperation in research. He was also the Chairperson of the International Organizing Committee that established the IPS in 1960 and served the society as both an Editor and as President.

The P. C. Silva Student Grants are made twice annually for up to 8 graduate students. Each award is USD $ 1000 and students are eligible to receive the award once per year.

Awards are made for:

  • Travel to meetings (including workshops) in which the student is presenting work on algae, whether the meeting is phycological or more general (e.g., evolution or ecology).
  • Research projects on algae, which must be student-led with support from the supervisor.
